Pequot Lakes, Pine River and the West Side of the Chain
A general look at the communities around the Whitefish Chain, including Pequot Lakes, Pine River, Manhattan Beach and Fifty Lakes, and the lakes nearby.
The Whitefish Chain is not one town. It sits among several communities, each with its own character, and the one you choose to be near shapes your experience of lake life. This is a general look at the towns around the chain beyond Crosslake, and at the lakes on the upper end of the system.
A chain shared by many communities
The Whitefish Chain spans Crow Wing and Cass counties in north-central Minnesota. Crosslake sits on Cross Lake at the dam. Around the rest of the chain, the communities of Pequot Lakes, Pine River, Manhattan Beach and Fifty Lakes each play a part in lake-country life.
Which town is closest to a given property depends on where it sits. When you look at a home, it helps to ask which community you will most likely use for everyday errands, services and gatherings, and which government office oversees the property. That office could be a city, Crow Wing County or Cass County, and it matters for permits, zoning and shoreland rules.
Pequot Lakes
Pequot Lakes is one of the communities in the area that many chain owners know well. Like other towns in lake country, it serves both year-round residents and people who come for the seasons. I will keep this general rather than name businesses or attractions. The best way to know Pequot Lakes is to spend time there and see how it fits your routine.
Pine River and the headwaters
Pine River is another community in the area, and it shares its name with the river that feeds the chain. The Pine River flows into Upper Whitefish, which is the headwaters of the system.
Upper Whitefish covers 3,434 acres with a maximum depth of 90 feet and average summer clarity around 12.5 feet. It is known as the walleye engine of the chain. Its size makes for big, open water, and it is a lake that many anglers come back to year after year.
Manhattan Beach and Fifty Lakes
Manhattan Beach and Fifty Lakes are smaller communities in the area around the chain. Like the larger towns, they have their own feel, shaped by the woods and water around them. If a property you are considering is near one of them, take time to drive the area, learn the roads in each season, and understand which local government handles permits and rules.
The lakes on the upper end
Beyond Upper Whitefish, several lakes give this part of the chain its character:
- Lower Whitefish is the largest lake on the chain at 4,288 acres and the deepest at 138 feet, with clarity around 14.8 feet. It is the hub, with channels to Pig and Rush-Hen and quick water to Cross Lake.
- Pig Lake is more a big bay of Whitefish than a separate lake, at 196 acres and 56 feet deep. It is deep, clear and private.
- Bertha sits between Whitefish and Clamshell. At 337 acres and 64 feet deep, it is known for big fish.
- Clamshell covers 211 acres, has a public launch and a channel to Bertha, and is known for pike and bluegill.
Each lake has its own personality, and the best way to understand them is on the water. A slow afternoon moving from the open water of Whitefish into a quiet bay will tell you more than any map. Try to visit in more than one season, too, because a lake in October can feel very different from the same lake in July. Our lake guides go deeper on all fourteen.
Choosing where to be
For buyers, the choice of town and lake often go together. Some people want to be close to town for convenience. Others want the quiet of a less traveled lake or bay. Some want big, open water and long boat rides, while others want a calm, protected shore.
I always encourage buyers to choose the right lake first, then the home. A few questions can help:
- How do you want to spend time on the water?
- Which town would you use most for errands and services?
- How important are year-round road access and services?
- Do you prefer busy water or quiet water?
The buyers page explains how I help people search, including new listings the day they hit the market and access to Private and Coming Soon homes when owners allow it.
Talk it over with David
I have spent my life in this part of Minnesota, and my family has been on the chain for four generations. Whether you are exploring the communities around the chain or thinking about the place you already own, I am glad to talk.
