Four Generations on the Chain: A Family Story

David Olson's family story, from a Swedish sawmill worker in Little Falls to four generations of Minnesota building and a home on Crosslake.

By David Olson, Broker · 4 min read

Every lake home has a story, and so does every builder. Mine begins more than a century ago, with a young man who left the sawmills of Sweden for Minnesota. His name was Gustaf Nordquist, and he was my great-great-grandfather.

From Sweden to Little Falls

Gustaf worked in the sawmills of Sweden before he came to America. He settled in Little Falls, Minnesota, a river town built on the timber of the north woods. There he helped manage the Pine Tree Lumber Company.

I think about that often. The work of turning trees into lumber, and lumber into homes, runs through my family from the very beginning of our time in Minnesota. When I walk a framed house today, I feel connected to the man who once stood among stacks of fresh-cut pine.

A leader who swept the floors

Gustaf was a leader in his church in Little Falls. He was also the one who volunteered to serve as its janitor. I have always loved that detail. He could have held a title and left the cleaning to others. Instead he took care of the building with his own hands.

That story has shaped how I try to work. Leadership and service are not separate things. The person who leads should also be willing to sweep the floor, to show up early, and to care for the details no one else notices.

A love story that ended too soon

My great-great-grandmother also came from Sweden. In Little Falls, she worked in the home of Charles Lindbergh's father. She and Gustaf married and had two little girls.

Then she fell ill. Gustaf cared for her through her sickness, and in caring for her, he caught the same illness. Both of them died, leaving their two little girls behind.

It is a hard story, and an important one to me. Gustaf did not hold back from the person he loved, even when it cost him everything. Our family carried on through those two girls, and every generation since owes something to the love and courage of the two people who came before.

Four generations of building

From that beginning in Little Falls, my family has been building in Minnesota for four generations. Through those years, the tools and materials changed, but the work stayed close to the same things: good wood, sound foundations, honest labor and homes made to last.

Today I carry that forward as a builder, remodeler, broker and licensed insurance agent. I own Ivy Lane Homes, which does luxury building and remodeling, and Super Crew Contractors, which handles roofing, siding, basements and remodeling. Over more than twenty years, I have been part of 3,127 home sales and over $1 billion in sales. Those numbers matter less to me than the people and homes behind them.

Home on the south bay of Crosslake

My family has been on the Whitefish Chain for four generations, and today I live on the south bay of Crosslake. This water is not just a market to me. It is where my family has made memories across the generations, and where I hope future generations will too.

Living here shapes how I help owners and buyers. I know what the lake asks of a home through every season. I know the channels, the bays and the character of each lake. And I understand that selling a lake home is often about much more than a house. It is about a family's history on the water.

You can read more about where we come from on our story page, and learn about the lakes my family has known for generations in our lake guides.

What this means for you

When you work with me, you work with someone who sees a home the way a builder does and a lake the way a neighbor does. I start every sale with a private valuation, a broker's opinion of value built from sold lake comparables and adjusted for frontage, condition, renovations, likely repair costs and insurability. It is not an appraisal, and nothing is listed until you say so.

That quiet, careful approach comes from somewhere. It comes from a man in Little Falls who swept his church floors and who loved his family enough to stay by his wife's side.

Talk it over with David

If your family has its own story on the chain, I would be honored to hear it. Whenever you are ready to talk about your lake home, I am here, in your own time and in your own light.
