Crosslake, Minnesota: A Guide to the Town at the Dam
A general guide to Crosslake, Minnesota, the town on Cross Lake at the dam on the Whitefish Chain, and what it is like to own nearby.
Crosslake is the town most people think of when they think of the Whitefish Chain. It sits on Cross Lake, at the dam, near the heart of the system. I live on the south bay of Crosslake, so this is home to me, and I am glad to share a general picture of what the town and its lake are like.
A town shaped by the water
Crosslake takes its name from Cross Lake, and the lake shapes almost everything about it. Cross Lake covers 1,815 acres with 21.85 miles of shoreline and a maximum depth of 84 feet. About 47 percent of the lake is 15 feet deep or less, and average summer clarity runs around 16.5 feet.
The dam at Cross Lake is part of what defines the chain, and the town's location there puts it close to many of the connected lakes. From Cross Lake, boaters can reach Rush-Hen by channel, find quick water to Lower Whitefish, and head to Daggett, which is the gateway to Little Pine.
The feel of the place
Crosslake is a lake town in the truest sense. Life follows the seasons. Summer brings boats on the water and activity in town. Fall brings color and quiet. Winter turns the lakes white and still. Spring begins with waiting for ice-out.
The town serves both people who live here year-round and people who come for weekends and seasons. You will find the everyday services a lake community relies on, along with places to gather, shop and eat. I am not going to name or rank businesses here; the best way to get to know them is to spend a few days in town and explore.
Getting around
Crosslake sits in north-central Minnesota, in Crow Wing County. The surrounding area includes the communities of Pequot Lakes, Pine River, Manhattan Beach and Fifty Lakes, each with its own character. Many people reach their lake homes by car and then do much of their getting around by boat during the open-water season.
Roads in lake country often wind around bays and through the woods, and some homes sit on private or seasonal roads. When looking at property, it is worth asking about road access in every season.
Owning near town
Owning on or near Cross Lake means being close to the services of town while still being on the water. That convenience appeals to many owners. It also means being on one of the busier parts of the chain during summer, especially near channels and the dam.
A few things owners in and around Crosslake should know:
- Local rules. Properties within the City of Crosslake follow city rules for zoning, permits and shoreland management. Properties outside city limits may fall under Crow Wing County or Cass County. Confirm which office governs your property before planning any project.
- Short-term rentals. Crosslake has a short-term rental ordinance, Ordinance 410. If you are considering renting your property, confirm the current licensing requirements directly with the city.
- The shoreline. Shoreland rules apply to lake properties, and work at the water's edge may also involve the Minnesota DNR.
The market around Crosslake
The Whitefish Chain is an active lake market. According to NorthstarMLS data as of November 4, 2026, 86 homes sold on the chain in the past 12 months, and 37 of those sold at $1 million or more. At that point there were 31 active listings and 6 pending. These figures cover the whole chain, not just Cross Lake, and past sales do not predict future value.
Values on the chain vary a great deal by lake, frontage, condition and the home itself. That is why every conversation I have with an owner begins with a private valuation, a broker's opinion of value based on sold lake comparables. It is not an appraisal. If you are looking to buy, you can browse current homes for sale on the chain.
Getting to know the town
If you are new to the area, the best introduction is time. Spend a weekend. Drive the roads around the lake. Take a boat out of town and through the channels. Visit in more than one season. Crosslake reveals itself slowly, and the people who love it most are usually the ones who took the time to learn its rhythms.
Our lake guides describe all fourteen lakes on the chain, which can help you understand how Cross Lake fits into the larger system.
