A Year on Upper Whitefish Lake
From the first open water at the river mouth to the last ice fishing house in March, here is how the seasons turn on the headwaters of the Whitefish Chain.
Spring: the ice lets go and the river wakes up
Spring on Upper Whitefish starts with waiting. Everyone watches the ice go gray, then dark, then gone. DNR ice-out records for Whitefish, which the agency logs as one lake, show how much that day moves around: early April in 2021 and 2024, May 7 in 2022, and as late as May 14 in 2013. The DNR's listed median is about April 25.
Around the same time, the Pine River comes alive. When water temperatures reach the mid-to-upper 40s, walleye run up the river to spawn, and the DNR sets up its egg take where the river enters Whitefish. Crews fence the river, net the fish each morning, strip and fertilize the eggs, and carry them to the Brainerd hatchery. The public can watch, and it is one of the quiet wonders of living here: the lake restocking itself, with a little help.
By mid-May, the walleye opener arrives, and the docks go in.

Summer: islands, bays and long evenings
Summer on Upper Whitefish is green. The protected bays fill with lily pads and wild rice, and the DNR has found some of the largest wild rice beds on the chain in Delta Bay, where the river enters. Loons work the open water, and the DNR's sensitive lakeshore survey of the chain recorded common loons across Whitefish.
The Rollie Johnson Natural and Recreational Area is the summer gathering place of the lake. Its three publicly owned islands, Big, Little and Steamboat, offer rustic camping and nature trails, open to the public with a suggested donation. Big Island holds a rare old-growth maple and basswood forest that was never logged. A tornado crossed the islands in June 2024, so check current trail conditions with Crow Wing County before you go.
The rest of summer is the chain itself: slow-no-wake glides through the channels, a run to a lakeside restaurant, swimming off a sandy point, and a late paddle into a bay at dusk.
Fall: color and quiet
When the boats thin out after Labor Day, Upper Whitefish changes character. The maples on Big Island and the shoreline aspen and birch turn, and the water goes still and cold. Fall is a favorite season for anglers here, and for anyone who loves an empty lake.
The Paul Bunyan Scenic Byway, a 54-mile route between Pequot Lakes and Crosslake through pine, birch and aspen forest, makes an easy afternoon drive in color season. Docks and lifts come out before freeze-up, and the lake settles in for winter.
Winter: ice season
Once the ice is safe, the lake becomes a different kind of neighborhood of fish houses, snowmobile tracks and tip-ups. Anglers work the weed edges for pike and panfish and the deeper breaks for walleye. The DNR's walleye season on inland waters runs into late February, so check current regulations each year.
Never assume the ice is safe, especially near the Pine River inlet, channels and other spots with moving water. Check thickness yourself and follow current DNR ice safety guidance.
The Paul Bunyan State Trail, which passes through Pequot Lakes and Jenkins, opens to snowmobiles in winter and connects to the region's groomed trail system.
A name that still swims here
Whitefish is a fitting name for this lake. The DNR's survey nets still turn up lake whitefish, along with their cousin the tullibee, living in the deep, cool water. Upper Whitefish reaches 90 feet at its deepest, giving those cold-water fish room through the heat of summer.
